- Grzegorz Sowa
Graduate of the Bachelor’s program (2012) and Master’s program (2014) in Biology and Geology (specialization: Nature Conservation) at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Earned his PhD in Biology in March 2022 at the Faculty of Biology, Jagiellonian University, defending a dissertation entitled “Effects of Pesticides and Landscape Structure on Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae): Biodiversity and Ecotoxicology.”
Between 2017 and 2020, led a PRELUDIUM project funded by the National Science Centre (NCN), devoted to the biodiversity and ecotoxicology of ground beetles in agricultural landscapes. At the same time, participated in an OPUS project, conducting fieldwork and toxicological experiments. During his doctoral studies, involved in the EcoStack project (Horizon Europe), to model ground beetle life history using the ALMaSS (Animal, Landscape and Man Simulation System) platform and carried out toxicological experiments.
Between 2022 and 2024, after receiving a PhD, worked as a post-doc at the University of Sheffield, UK (the AENEAS project, funded by the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA), focusing on the development of indicators and methodologies to assess the impact of pesticide use and agriculture landscape structure changes on selected invertebrate groups and their role in ecosystem services (pollination, pest control). Shortly before beginning work at the NCN, involved in the PollinERA project (Horizon Europe) at the Team of Terrestrial Ecosystems and Ecotoxicology, Jagiellonian University, developing monitoring systems for pollinator exposure in agricultural areas.
During undergraduate and master’s studies, an active member of the Student Council at the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences, Jagiellonian University, serving as Vice‑Chair of the Faculty Student Council and Chair of the Culture Committee, as well as member of the Economic Committee. Co-organized the University’s Open Days, Biology Night and Kraków Science Festival, promoting science through workshops and lectures. During his PhD, represented doctoral candidates at the Institute of Zoology Council and the Faculty’s Electoral Committee, served as Chair of the Economic and Social Committee for Scholarships for Outstanding Doctoral Students. Co-organized a scientific session at the SETAC Europe 34th Annual Meeting.
Recipient of the SETAC Europe scholarship and the Jagiellonian University scholarship for top doctoral students. Author and co-author of several articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and speaker at international conferences. Since June 2025, he employed as Coordinator for Life Sciences at the National Science Centre.
